Building a Collection You Enjoy Wearing

A watch collection does not need to follow a formula. It might begin with one everyday piece, a family watch or a design you have admired for years. What matters is that the watches make sense to the person wearing them.

Start with your routine

Consider when and where you will wear each watch. Comfort, legibility, dimensions and ease of use can matter as much as the name on the dial. Trying different styles helps you discover what you actually enjoy.

Give each watch a reason to belong

Some collectors enjoy contrasting styles; others focus on one model, period or type of movement. There is no required number of watches and no need to add a piece simply because a collection is supposed to include it.

Learn the details

Dial variations, bracelet construction, movement generations and case proportions can make seemingly similar watches feel different. Take time to understand a reference and then examine the condition and history of the particular example you are considering.

Keep ownership practical

Think about service support, storage and suitable insurance, where needed. Keep purchase records and service documentation together. These help you care for the watch and explain its history accurately in future.

Let your tastes develop

A collection can change as you learn. Enjoy the watches you have, ask questions and add pieces at a pace that suits you. Our Hatton Garden team can help you compare individual watches and understand their condition before you decide.

Bought my watch from you guys last February, nice too see you doing articles now.
Spot on (mostly). Not so practical to wear a fragile, radioactive 1950’s Submariner, but I get the point mostly.
Good to know about the tax-free bit.
