The Tempvs Inspection

Buying a pre-owned watch is ultimately an exercise in trust. Before a watch is offered for sale by Tempvs, we assess the areas that matter most to a buyer and collector.

What we look at

  • Authenticity: case, dial, movement, bracelet/strap, clasp and identifying details are assessed for consistency with the reference.
  • Reference and serial information: where available and appropriate, identifying information is checked against the watch and accompanying documentation.
  • Condition: we assess case shape, polishing, dial, hands, bezel, crystal, bracelet stretch, clasp and visible wear.
  • Function: time setting, winding, date change, chronograph or other complications are checked as applicable.
  • Timekeeping: mechanical watches are tested for running performance appropriate to their age and specification.
  • Water resistance: where appropriate, practicable and relevant to the watch, water-resistance testing may be carried out. Vintage watches should never be assumed to retain their original depth rating unless specifically confirmed.
  • Box, papers and accessories: included items are checked and described where supplied.

Vintage and neo-vintage watches

Older watches require more nuance than a simple pass/fail checklist. Service dials, replacement hands, later bracelets, polishing and period-correct replacement components can all affect desirability and value. Where we know of a material replacement or condition point, we aim to disclose it clearly.

Ask us before you buy

If originality, polishing, service history or a specific component matters to you, ask us. We would rather answer a detailed question before purchase than leave a collector uncertain afterwards.

The Tempvs Inspection supports, but does not replace, the individual description and terms supplied with each watch.
